OUR TROUBLES IN ASIA  by Rev. Sarkis Devirian. 1897.

  • Very rare 110 years old book. Illustrated. Published in 1897 by Republican Job Print Co., NY, USA.   First and only limited edition.  Ex-library copy with library pocket in the back, but it looks like the copy had never been loaned out.  Still has original hinges, good condition for its age of 110 years.

In 1896 Rev. Sarkis Devirian wrote a book about the 1895-96 Armenian massacres in Turkey.  He came to USA after the massacres from Cilician Armenia. Since it was very expensive to publish a book and he did not have a sponsor, he was able to publish only about 100 copies in a small publishing house on his own expense.  Today Rev. Devirian's book is one of the most rare and unknown book on the Armenia genocide.  This book is an important secondary source on the suffering of the Armenians and other Christians under Ottoman rule.  Most of text text is about the events that have led up to the terrible massacres that have occurred in Armenia with a full account of the same - so bloody and brutal in character and extent as to shock the entire Christian world.  It is profusely illustrated with many pictures and drawings.

This book has 40 b/w photos and plates, most of them covering church officials, missionaries, school children and other Armenian leaders who perished during the 1895-96 Hamidian massacres in Turkey.  This book is a very scarce and important study on the Armenians and Turks of the Ottoman empire by a native Armenian pastor.  The book is a personal account of the Armenian history by 1895-96 Massacre survivor.  It is a descriptive, historical and picturesque account, which includes very rare illustrations.
